Parents will get their chance to learn about Homedale School District’s new policy allowing trained and qualified staff members to carry firearms on school property.

In an email to parents, Homedale superintendent Rob Sauer announced that a meeting will be held at 7 p.m., on Monday inside the high school fine arts auditorium (a k a the “old gym”).

“We recognize this is an important decision and one that may bring questions, concerns, and different perspectives,” Sauer wrote in his letter to parents and guardians.

Sauer said district officials want to explain the policy and safeguards and requirements that will be developed.

Parents will also hear directly from those people involved in the process created by Policy 9450.

Monday’s meeting will cover:

• Information about the policy

• Selection and training requirements for participating staff members

• How the program will work alongside the School Resource Officer (Liset Llamas) from the Homedale Police Department

• How the program will work with existing safety measures

• How the district is working the HPD

“Most importantly, we want this to be an opportunity for an open and respectful conversation,” Sauer wrote. “We understand that parents may have concerns, and we want to help you better understand why the district is moving forward with this additional safety measure.”

As in The Owyhee Avalanche article announcing the district’s plan, Sauer assured parents that school officials don’t take the responsibility of children’s safety lightly.

“Our goal is, and will continue to be, to do everything we reasonably can to provide a safe, secure, and welcoming environment where our students can learn and our staff can work,” Sauer wrote.
